Our Vision

As well as the more obvious needs of clean water and food, young people in Ethiopia need education! However, due to serious poverty, many are robbed of this opportunity. Children often have to work to support their family on subsistence farms. Some children attend school part-time and travel long distances, others do not attend at all. HIV/AIDS is increasing in Ethiopia leaving children without families to support them. More orphanages are needed to care for the growing number of orphans.

Ethiopia Education Aid is a Christian Charity whose deepest desire is to support orphans and young people to receive an education and reach their full potential. We encourage students to gain a qualification or trade to enable them to earn a living and use their skills to benefit the local community. EEA aims to bring the love of God to the young people of Ethiopia by:
A) Sponsoring individuals to attend school,
B) Supporting Emmanuel Orphans Development Association

The aims and purposes of Emmanuel Orphanage are to improve the lives of children who live in poverty or are otherwise at risk. They are committed to alleviating poverty by providing love, food, shelter, clothing, health care and educational opportunities. The outcome is to provide hope and empower the children’s lives. Ethiopia Education Aid raises funds to help support the children of Emmanuel Orphanage to reach these objectives. Statistics gathered in 2003 reported there were nearly 4 million orphans in Ethiopia. This figure is significantly higher today in 2008 as HIV/AIDS continues to grow at an alarming rate!

Sponsored Students

Mulugeta is one of our sponsored students. He grew up in a rural area without education. He has lost both parents and did not start school until he was 15. When we first met Mulugeta he was 22 years old and working long hours in a shop to feed himself and attend school. He could not afford books or school uniform and was struggling to complete his final grade 10 exams to finish school.

Mulugeta
With support from EEA Mulugeta successfully completed his Grade 10 exams. This was followed by a nine month course in English and Computer Studies. He is now studying on a three year Tourist Management Course in the Capital City, Addis Ababa.

News Release (as appeared in the Totnes Times, April 2009)
Cycle challenge aims to raise money for Ethiopian children

A 63 year old Dartington man is set to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for a charity, Ethiopa Education Aid.

Maurice Clarke has been stepping up his training in order to tackle the 1,000 mile journey and aims to set off from Lands End on Saturday 9th May.
Maurice hopes to ride between 50 and 60 miles every day and says his determination and inspiration comes from the visits he and his wife, Susan, have made to Ethiopia .
“ Ethiopia has suffered from devastating droughts and famine and coupled with the effects of war, life is a daily struggle for the people”, said Maurice.
“HIV/AIDs is increasing, leaving children without families to help them. We now sponsor nine young people through education and also support an orphanage.
“It should be every child’s right to receive an education to help them reach their full potential. Having visited Ethiopia on several occasions, we can see the result of previous fund raising. We pay for our own travel to the country and make sure that all money donated is directed to the children.”
The charity has already helped Sonido, aged 5. His father has died from HIV and his mother has the disease. The charity has bought a school uniform for him, given medical help and the support of a social worker. They are also supporting Elisabeth, aged 13 who lives in a plastic hut beside the road.

Anyone wanting to sponsor Maurice can contact him through a comment on this article, or call him on 01803 864158

Ethiopia Now

Visit to Ethiopia 6th - 20th April’09

We ask for your prayer for our trip to Ethiopia. Your intercessory prayers are so needed to sustain and protect us as we travel to a land where life is very different from our own. It really helps to know we are “held in prayer” whilst away from home. This year it’s not just Maurice & Susan going out by themselves. Eileen Winter, Peter Dunn, Donna Matthews and Rona, a friend from Exeter, will be coming with us.

Our itinerary is :
7-Apr-09 Arrive Addis Ababa ,
12-Apr-09 Travel to Welisso
13-Apr-09 Return to Addis
14-Apr-09 Fly to lalibela
19-Apr-09 Fly to Addis
20-Apr-09 Depart Addis - Heathrow

We will spend 3 days teaching 25-30 church workers at Emmanuel Baptist church in Addis Ababa and two days with 300 Sunday school children. We will also visit an Orphanage with 43 children. Then to Lalibela to meet more local Christians, and for a few days sight-seeing.
